British Minister of Artificial Intelligence: The need to speed up the construction of data centresGold Financial Report, on 29 September, the United Kingdom Secretary of State for Artificial Intelligence Narayan stated that the UK needed to “fast-track” the development of data centres in order to achieve its goal of having a “sovereign level” of artificial intelligence computing capability and infrastructure. Narayan said that expanding data centre capacity “is a reason for public understanding and support”, but acknowledged that there are still societal concerns about the risks posed by artificial intelligence. He stated that data centre expansion must remain “controllable” to sustain public support, including avoiding over-building, ensuring “the voice of local communities” and delivering tangible benefits through investment in clean energy. The British Government has promoted a data centre investment plan of up to Pound100 billion (approximately $136 billion) and politicians, including Naryan, have argued that the United Kingdom needs to establish its own data centres in order to reduce reliance on other countries.
